Incognito Is Private on Your Device, Not on the Network
Incognito mode has a branding problem. The name makes it sound like you put on a disguise and walked through the internet unseen.
That is not really what it does.
Incognito mode, private browsing, private window, whatever your browser calls it, is mostly a local cleanup tool. It helps keep your browsing history off the device after you close the window. That is useful. It is just not the same thing as a VPN.
What Incognito actually hides
When you open an incognito window, your browser usually stops saving a few things locally:
- Browsing history. The sites you visit in that window should not appear in your normal history list.
- Cookies from that session. Most temporary cookies go away when you close every private tab.
- Form entries. Searches and typed form data are less likely to stick around in autocomplete.
That makes incognito good for shared computers, gift shopping, logging into a second account, or checking a site without your normal cookies. Google Chrome says third-party cookies are blocked by default in Incognito. Firefox says private browsing clears cookies when you close the window.
So yes, private browsing is useful. It keeps the next person who opens your laptop from casually seeing what you were doing.
What Incognito does not hide
The part people miss is the network. Your browser can decide not to save history on your laptop. It cannot magically hide the connection leaving your laptop.
Your internet provider can still see connection metadata. Your school or employer can still monitor traffic on their network. Websites can still see your IP address. If you log into a website, that website knows it is you. Private mode does not make that account anonymous.
Mozilla puts it simply: private browsing keeps your local browsing private, but it does not stop your ISP, school, or employer from seeing where you have been online. Security companies say the same basic thing. Incognito hides activity from other people using your device, not from the internet itself.
Where a VPN fits
A VPN solves a different problem. It creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the VPN server. The local WiFi network, hotel, airport, library, or ISP sees encrypted traffic going to one VPN server instead of a readable list of DNS lookups and traffic patterns.
That does not make you invisible. If you log into Gmail, Google still knows it is you. If you post on Instagram, Instagram still has your account activity. A VPN is not a magic privacy cloak.
But it does change the first hop of trust. Without a VPN, your network provider sits directly between you and everything you do online. With a VPN, that local network sees much less. That is especially useful on public WiFi, mobile networks, hotels, airports, and any connection you do not control.
The best setup is boring: use incognito when you do not want local history saved, and use a VPN when you do not want the network watching your connection. They are not competitors. They cover different leaks.
